The world's most wacky and unusual festivals

From crowning a frog princess to throwing moose poo from a helicopter in the name of joy, people all over the world just love celebrating crazy things. If you ever needed proof that people are nuts, check out some of the planet's most unusual festivals.

Blackawton International Festival of Worm Charming

If you've ever fancied yourself as a bit of a charmer, there's a festival in England that will truly test your skills. You might get a little grubby as you crawl about trying to woo those worms out of their hiding places… yes, that's right. Worms. You didn't think we were talking about women, did you? You can't dig them out, but you can sing, play instruments, dance and beg. And if you cheat you'll be put in the stocks and taunted till you apologise. Fun, huh?

Rayne Frog Festival

If you're hopping mad your insanity will be welcomed in Louisiana in November when the Rayne Frog Festival offers a "toadally awesome time".  Here's when frogs bounce into the limelight and the prestigious crowning of the Frog Derby Queen brings locals and tourists alike out for a fun time with all things froggy. There's frog races, frog jumping, the grilling of some delicious Cajun-style frog's legs, musical talent to entertain the masses and all manner or fairground rides. Ribbit.

Moose Dropping Festival

July in Alaska might not be the coldest time to visit, but it's probably the weirdest. In the tiny town of Talkeenta, moose poo is the name of the game. After being shellacked and painted white, these little nuggets of joy are dropped with abandon from balloons and helicopters because… well, why wouldn't you? The festival was almost cancelled back in 2009 when an influx of keen tourists grew too much for the town to handle, but they've since spread the festivities throughout the year so you've got even more chance of catching one. Which is nice.

Wife Carrying Championships

There's no such thing as light work in a marriage but you'd both be wise not to eat too much before participating in one of the world's weirdest festivals – the Wife Carrying Championships. Stemming from a bandit who carried away the woman of a village in Finland back in the 1800s, this festival now involves men carrying their wives over a 253.5-metre obstacle course and countries all over the world participate. Costumes are worn, prizes for strength and speed are awarded and men inevitably go forth in their marriages with back sprains. All in the name of love, folks.

Baby-Jumping Festival

Some people think that to guard your baby from evil, it's best to keep it close, give it cuddles and lock the door at night, but clearly this is wrong. You should actually place it on a mattress in the middle of town and let a grown man dressed as a devil jump over it. This tactic for warding off evil is practiced at the Baby-Jumping Festival on the Catholic day of Corpus Christi in northern Spain. The bizarre blend of Catholic beliefs and pagan rituals has offended many over the past 400 years (can't think why) but still the craziness continues. At least the kids are safe, right?

The weirdness continues

Other surprising festivals you may have actually heard of are Thailand's Songkran Festival, when you'd be wise not to carry around anything that might be damaged in the event of being blasted by a water gun, and La Tomatina in the Spanish town of Bunyol, when the town is taken hostage by an abundance of flying tomatoes.

Have you heard of a weird festival somewhere that you think we should know about? Let us know and don't forget to keep it crazy. Life's more fun that way.
